What is Septic Pumping/Cleaning?

 

Septic tank cleaning is the procedure of pumping your tank to ensure it is completely emptied of its liquid and solid contents. Cleaning your tank regularly will help avoid excess scum and sludge accumulation and free up space for the separation of materials in the septic tank.  

 

Locating the Septic Tank

Septic tanks are usually located far away from the home foundation but adjacent to where the plumbing exits the house.

 

You can use a probe bar to locate the tank, be extra careful if your tank is polyethylene or fibreglass.

 

You can also request the on-site sewage plan for the property from your local health authority, this will pinpoint where the septic tank is located. Newer systems may have septic risers to the surface and are easy to find.

 

Pumping

After locating and accessing the tank, the actual cleaning will commence. To ensure the solids are emptied we will begin pumping and mixing the solids with the liquid in the tank. Throughout the time we are pumping, we will continue to mix and pull the solids to the hose to ensure we get it pumped out. We may need to add water while doing this to break up and thin out the solids if they are excessively thick. While pumping we will look for any issues with the system. If any issues are found, we will give you advice on how to fix them. We leave a small amount of sludge in the bottom of the tank to help with the restart of the bacterial activity. When completed, we request the homeowner to flush the toilets to ensure there is no restriction on flow into the tank. Once the tank is pumped, the covers are replaced and any minor spills will be washed down.
